Home gardening fest set for Oct. 16 and 17

Each year, the Fall Flower & Garden Fest draws an average of 5,000 visitors interested in learning about all aspects of vegetable, flower and herb gardening.

Experts from the MSU Extension Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Master Gardeners and other groups will deliver 17 educational garden seminars each day and give one-on-one advice on the latest gardening techniques and plant recommendations.

Admission and on-site parking are free. The event opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m. both days. Vendors will offer food and drinks.

MSU specialists will give informational walking tours of the gardens throughout the event on topics specific to flowers, vegetables, landscape plants, diseases and insects. Among other topics are composting, beekeeping, new turf plots, pond management, specialty crops and backyard wildlife habitats. Wagon tours of the 175-acre research site also will be offered.

A 3-acre garden will display more than 70 vegetable and flower varieties that are All-America Selections winners, a prestigious national horticultural award. The All-America Selections logo will be displayed on the winning plants' variety signs.

More than 60 vendors will offer many kinds of plants, yard art and garden tools for sale. Attendees can ask gardening questions, get soil tested, and have plants, insects or disease samples identified at the Plant Doctor Table under the main tent.
